Zanias - To The Core Remixes

Just over 12 months on from To The Core—Zanias' debut for Noiztank, the Vienna based label bestow upon us a remix EP of the same name, bringing together four very different artists, each of them highly regarded, to rework tracks from the EP; they offer three reinterpretations of Follow The Body and a single version of To The Core.

First we're treated to Kobosil's take on Follow The Body; the Berlin heavyweight distresses the vocal, but not beyond recognition—quite the contrary in fact, it remains fairly coherent as he pumps out a peak time slammer that darkens the tone and then some; the relentless, punishing drum kicks will leave you feeling battered and bruised. Next up is the Agency's (August Skipper, one half of Operant) Body Exit Remix, offers an abusive, industrial interpretation: frenzied, chomping percussion is ravaged mercilessly before being regurgitated into the vocal track, drenching it, then chocking it up before finally being drowned under a putrid shower of downright filthy, screaming dancefloor noise. Fusing aspects of In Eternal Return, Dax J shows great respect to the original, particularly the vocals, leaving them almost unaltered whilst injecting short, sharp bursts of euphoria in the final version of Follow The Body, allowing Lewis' ethereal flow to sweep you along until the latter part of the track, which is strewn with those sumptuous breaks; this one has the potential to, and could quite easily, blow up. Finally, Unhuman continues his impressive form, offering up the only remix of the title track To The Core, with a typically expressive EBM workout, it's a mean affair as you might expect, shipped with bags of attitude; The Liber Null boss and Constant Value resident ruthlessly and unceremoniously dissects the vocals, the fragments of which are carried along by his proto-tech, machine-driven fury.

After this year's already impressive releases from Black Swords, Restive Plaggona and Ike Yard, this remix collection is, without doubt, another fine release from the stable. Originality and imperious production values are a standard with every Noiztank release; it is precisely this sort of attitude that has established the label's ever growing reputation.
