28 November 2016 | VA - Raw Raw #11
Ukraine-based Raw Raw Records continues its run with a third addition to their vinyl-only catalog. While inviting previously featured Stanislav Tolkachev, Eric Fetcher and Savas Pascalidis, they also bring in German duo I/Y. EP kicks off with "North", a track that runs at Tolkachev's generally preferred 135 BPM and consists of two elements - a panned, spacious, and frequently dichotomizing squeaker, and a moderately-metallic 4/4 kick drum stomper, which by times unexpectedly stops for a second or two to catch breath. What's next is more restrained "Signal Control" that runs two BPM points lower; Fetcher leaves mid-range unoccupied to give attention to soft kicks with low-oscillating bassline, and as for higher spectrum - two layers of 8/4 and 4/4 dry hats plus two layers of bleeping sequences that don't quite respect the other elements' agenda and cause some diversion in the established rhythm. "Scenes On Silver Grains" by I/Y returns to 135 BPM and proper kicks, with acidic bassline going from high to low end, oftenly reverberating in the background, as an evil twin who builds appalling plans behind his brother's back. Last but not the least - Pascalidis presents us his craftily built, breakless number "Dilemma", where half-muffled 128 BPM kicks and two sets of hats (one of them being a ceaseless 16/4 attack while the other is more leisurely-paced, syncopated arrangement), are supported by an oddly synthesized, frantic, ever-delaying bassline and an oscillating, non-yielding supportive sequence in the lower range. All in all, a good occasion to support Ukraine's vinyl export.
