Unknown Duo - Hand Cut Bootleg

From a distance one can make out shapes and figures—although nothing that goes farther than impressions. But no reason to approach, since only from this vantage point does the experience of the whole, all at once, take its place.

Most of private life is spent in an activity of decipherment. It works but produces little, cutting away at vagueries until the remainders are ungraspable. There are therefore few monuments to it; and probably none represent it completely.

Though there is something here. A found object. A thing less made and given name than roughly guessed at according to the work put into it: “Hand Cut Bootleg”. Likewise, the artists, who are unnamed but numbered—the “Unknown Duo”. And then more numbers, their meaning unknown: “47091-01689”.

    What is it?

This is a poetry that delivers an impression of the language without using any of its words. A music of syllabic counterpoint.

The stress produced by this restriction to the partial has also produced a characteristic rhythm, composed in torrents of whole phrases competing for air and temporal purchase.

It’s a kind of gift as well, since in this life one can expect only a little of the worldly, and then only by fighting for it. How unexpected, then, is this plenitude. For one bracing oneself to listen hard, these are its lyrics:

“I would live or die for you”—I’m ready for all possibilities, whatever you desire. Either way, for either end, I’m ready.

    And a benediction:

    “God bless.”
